Sand, Sun, and Savasana: What to Bring to Your First Outdoor Yoga Class

Bec Ginley | MAR 17

If you have only ever practiced yoga in a traditional, temperature-controlled studio, rolling out your mat in the great outdoors can feel like a completely new adventure. And it is! Practicing under the open sky at Hollindale Park brings a beautiful sense of freedom, fresh air, and connection to nature that you simply can't get indoors.

However, swapping the hardwood floor for grass and the ceiling for the sky does require a slight tweak to your yoga kit. If you are joining Yoga by the Beach with Bec for the first time, here is a quick checklist of what to bring so you can flow comfortably.

1. A Mat (and maybe a towel!) The grass at the park is soft and inviting, but the ground can sometimes be slightly uneven or damp with morning dew. Bring your standard yoga mat, and if you have an older mat or a beach towel, feel free to place it underneath for a little extra padding and protection from the damp grass.

2. Smart Sun Protection We practice early in the morning when the sun is gentle, but this is still sunny Queensland! Be sure to apply sunscreen before you arrive. A hat and a pair of sunglasses are also great additions, especially during postures where you might be looking up at that beautiful morning sky.

3. Layers, Layers, Layers Coastal mornings can be a little crisp before the sun fully rises, but you will warm up quickly once we start moving through our sun salutations. Wear comfortable, breathable activewear, but bring a light long-sleeved top or a jumper that you can easily peel off as you build heat, and pop back on for our final resting pose (Savasana).

4. Hydration Breathing the fresh ocean air and moving your body is thirsty work. Bring a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated before, during, and after the flow.

5. An Open Mind Outdoor yoga is less about absolute perfection and more about being present. Sometimes a gentle breeze might challenge your balance in Tree Pose, or a local bird might provide the soundtrack to your meditation. Embrace the elements! The beauty of practicing in nature is learning to flow with whatever the morning brings.
