Busting the Biggest Yoga Myth: “I’m Not Flexible Enough”

Bec Ginley | MAR 17

"I would love to try yoga, but I can’t even touch my toes!"

If I had a dollar for every time I heard this phrase (mostly from my husband!), I could probably buy post-yoga coffees for our entire morning class at Main Beach. It is, without a doubt, the number one reason people hesitate to unroll a mat.

In a world where our social media feeds are flooded with images of acrobatic yogis bending into impossible pretzel shapes, it is completely understandable why you might think flexibility is a strict requirement for entry. But I am here to let you in on a little secret: saying you are too stiff for yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a shower. Here is the truth about flexibility, and why you are already perfectly equipped to join us on the grass.

The Reality Check: Yoga is for Gaining Flexibility

Flexibility is not a prerequisite for yoga; it is a result of the practice.

The goal of our morning flows at Hollindale Park isn't to see who can stretch the furthest or who has the deepest forward fold. The real goal is mobility, relieving the tension we hold in our bodies (especially if you spend hours sitting at a desk!), and linking our breath to our movement.

When we practice, we meet our bodies exactly where they are on that specific day. If your hands rest on your shins or your knees instead of the ground, you are still doing yoga. You are still getting the exact same benefits of blood flow, joint lubrication, and mental clarity.

Why Outdoor Yoga is the Perfect Starting Point

If you are feeling self-conscious about your flexibility, an outdoor class is truly the best place to start.

1. There Are No Mirrors Traditional yoga studios are often lined with mirrors, which can naturally make us focus on what a pose looks like rather than what it feels like. Out at the park, our only view is the ocean, the trees, and the open sky.

2. A Judgement-Free Zone Our community at Yoga by the Beach with Bec is incredibly diverse. We have complete beginners, seasoned practitioners, and everything in between. The vibe is casual, welcoming, and entirely free of expectation.

3. Modifications are Always Encouraged Yoga is highly adaptable. Throughout our classes, I always offer variations and modifications for different poses. You have full permission to bend your knees, take breaks, and adjust the practice so it feels good for your unique body.

Come As You Are

The hardest part of yoga isn't touching your toes—it's simply showing up. Once you step onto the mat and take that first deep breath of fresh ocean air, the rest takes care of itself.

So, leave the pretzel poses to Instagram, bring your beautifully stiff hamstrings, and come move with us!
